ADP Adult Mobility Equipment Categories

Manual Wheelchairs:

Adult

Category 1: Standard wheelchairs weighing more than 38 lbs. including Swingaway Footrests and Removable Arms. (Basic Users)

Category 2: Lightweight wheelchairs in the 25 to 38 lb range including Swingaway Footrests and Removable Arms. (Active Users)

Category 3: Lightweight wheelchairs in the 25 to 38 lb range which include adjustability of center of gravity, Removable Armrests, Quick Release Axles, Footrests and Anti-Tippers. (Very Active Users)

Category 4: Ultra Light wheelchairs less than 25 lbs. that include adjustability of center of gravity, Removable Armrests, Quick Release Axles, Footrests and Anti-Tippers. These are non-folding rigid wheelchairs. (Very Active Users)

Category 5: Manual Dynamic Tilt wheelchairs which include Removable Adjustable Height Arms, Swingaway Footrests, Anti-Tippers and Quick Release Axles. These are also non-folding rigid wheelchairs. (Users who require tilting seat frame because of inability to weight shift)

Pediatric

Category 2: Lightweight wheelchairs in the 25 to 38 lb range including Swingaway Footrests and Removable Arms. (Active Users)

Category 3: Lightweight wheelchairs in the 25 to 38 lb range which include adjustability of center of gravity, Removable Armrests, Quick Release Axles, Footrests and Anti-Tippers. (Very Active Users)

Category 4: Ultra Light wheelchairs less than 25 lbs. that include adjustability of center of gravity, Removable Armrests, Quick Release Axles, Footrests and Anti-Tippers. These are non-folding rigid wheelchairs. (Very Active Users).

Category 5: Manual Dynamic Tilt wheelchairs which include Removable Adjustable Height Arms, Swingaway Footrests, Anti-Tippers and Quick Release Axles. (Users who require tilting seat frame because of inability to weight shift)

Category 6: Pediatric Only. Wheelbases and Strollers which interface with user's specialized seating systems.

Power Wheelchairs:

Adult

Category 1: Basic Electric Wheelchair for use on hard flat surfaces and do not require much customization or high end electronics. Most are foldable for transportation. Basic features include Removable Height Adjustable Armrests, Swingaway Footrests and Proportional Joystick. (Mostly for basic indoor use)

Category 2: Electric Wheelchair which allows for special controls and switch options, major modifications, customization to electronics and other adaptive accessories.

Category 3: Electric Wheelchair for users who require specialty controls, extreme modifications, customization to electronics and current or future need of power tilt and/or power recline. Base funding includes joystick only. A separate seating package must be chosen at time of purchase.

Category 4: This power wheelchair type offers manual dynamic tilt required by the user who can not maintain a functional posture through the use of seating components alone.

Power Add-On Device (no categories)

Device added to a manual wheelchair to assist the user meet their long term basic and essential mobility requirements. User must be able to operate the manual wheelchair independently.

This code may be used only when it is not anticipated that the user will require the use of a power wheelchair to meet their long term basic and essential mobility requirements.

Scooters:

Category 1: Scooters primarily designed for hard flat surfaces and relatively light use. Not suitable for rough terrain or heavy use.

Category 2: Scooters designed primarily for outdoor use on rough terrain and heavy users.

Walkers:

Category 1: Walkers primarily designed for indoor use with 5" or smaller wheels and sometimes a basket, seat and/or brakes.

Category 2: Walkers designed for outdoor use primarily. Usually have 8" wheels, basket, backrest and hand brakes. Heavier construction than the category 1 walkers.
